Once again, we are witnessing a major merciless and inhuman mass killing of Muslims amid inaction and silence of the international community.

The new wave of persecution of Muslims in Myanmar has led to massacre of hundreds of innocent Muslim people - many of them women and children -, disappearance of thousands and displacement of hundreds of thousands, destruction and burning of their properties including homes and places of worship. The authorities and the army not only stood idly and did nothing to prevent further slaughter, but also backed the Buddhist extremist groups to carry out their atrocities

Muslims have been living in Myanmar for many centuries, yet the authorities refuse to give recognition to their basic rights. Indeed, in the words of some senior officials, Muslims are not citizens and should be sent to camps. The community, numbering over several millions, have faced many human rights violations during the past two years. Over 800,000 Muslims now live in very adverse condition in camps surrounded by extremist militants in Myanmar.

The brutal massacre has all the hallmark of crimes against humanity and thus should be discussed and examined by the United Nations Security Council at its special session. It is very unfortunate that yet again the countries claiming to be proponents of human rights have been neglecting the plight of Muslims in Myanmar. This clearly exposes the double standard in their approach to human rights. The silence of the international community about the situation in Myanmar will set precedence in violation of basic rights and international laws and a dangerous trend in the international relations.

Union of Islamic Student Associations (USIA) calls on everyone concerned to express their indignation and take whatever steps they can to help stop these atrocities.

UISA calls on relevant international organisations to condemn this barbaric crime and fulfil their responsibility by taking prompt action to help put an end to this genocide and ensure the safety and security of the victims and their families and the safe return of the refugees to their homeland. UISA expects the organisations to make sure that justice would be done to the perpetrators.
