Burglar- finder flowers !

It looks prettier than , makes less noise than an alarm and eats less than a guard dog. Police in Essex hope that the new anti-burglar device that they arewill soon bein the flowerbeds of its towns and villages.

Launched at Cambridge Botanical Gardens yesterday is a scheme for plants which will deter burglars. The police believe that if home and office owners put in certain plants, the life of intruders would be more difficult.

'Obviously it is a fun thing, but there is a serious side to it,' said a police spokesman.

Posters and leaflets advising the public which plants to choose will be available from police stations. Ray Veerman, consultant to Essex police, has made a list of 12 plants which are particularly prickly or uncomfortable. They include berberis, pyracantha, gorse, hawthorn and prickly evergreen.

They should be planted as a hedge to burglars, or as an additional line of defence below a window. Offices and factories lucky enough to have a flowerbed are being advised that defensive planting could be that one extra factor, like a barking dog, that will deter burglars.
