Mathworks MATLAB R2011a نام یکی از معروف ترین و کاربردی ترین نرم‌افزارهای رایانه‌ای برای انجام محاسبات ریاضی است که اگر زیاد هم اهل کامپیوتر نباشید حتما اسم آن را شنیده اید . .

 شکل کار کردن با این برنامه به این صورت  است که تمامی داده ها را به صورت ماتریس در می آورد برای مثال یک عد به شکل یک ماتریس 1*1 ذخیره می‌شود. یک رشته هم به شکل ماتریسی با یک سطر و چندین ستون  ذخیره می‌شود. حتی تصاویر و عکس ها و فایل های صوتی  نیر به شکل یک ماتریس سه بعدی ذخیره می‌گردد که بُعد اول و دوم آن برای تعیین مختصات نقاط و بُعد سوم آن برای تعیین رنگ نقاط استفاده می‌شود. و این معنی واقعی این نرم افزار یعنی ,  Matrix Laboratory  را مشخص میکند

استفاده از توابع Matlab برای نمایش داده‏ها هم بسیار ساده است . ساخت رابط‌های گرافیکی یا Graphical User Interfaces مانند دیالوگ‌هایی که در محیط‌های ویژوال مانند بیسیک و C وجود دارند، در Matlab امکان‌پذیر است. این قابلیت، ارتباط بهتری را میان برنامه‏های کاربردی نوشته‏شده با Matlab و کاربران برقرار می‌کند.
