A quarter of Londoners would like to be a councilor, despite many not knowing what the job entails or who runs their council, according to a poll.
Rubbish collection, local taxes and leisure services are among areas overseen by local councilors in Britain, who number 20,000 in total and are elected by the communities they serve.
The poll,
carried-out for London Councils an organization which represents the
city's 33 borough councils, found that about half of 1,001 people
surveyed believed, wrongly, that the police are run by councilors.
Only 40 percent knew which political party runs their own council and just six percent knew the name of their council leader.
"It is vital for
the health and prosperity of London's local government that we help
more people understand what a council does and what it takes to be a
councilor," said Merrick Cockell, chairman of London Councils.
About a quarter of Londoners surveyed said they would like to become a councilor, but over half wrongly believed local councilors must represent a political party.
