Researchers have discovered a new protein which could possibly revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of Huntington's disease.
According to a study published in the Experimental Medicine,
Huntington's gene is responsible for the hyperactivity of white blood
cells and high levels of certain proteins known as cytokines in the
brain and blood.
The study showed that an overactive immune response induced by high
cytokine levels is linked to cerebral damage related to Huntington's
disease.
University College London researchers claim that while it is impossible
to evaluate cytokine levels in the brain tissue of living individuals,
monitoring the protein's blood levels can reveal the effectiveness of
the treatment.
Scientists concluded that the association between the presence of faulty genes and high levels of blood cytokines can lead to the discovery of new and more effective medication for the disease.
Huntington's disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by uncontrolled movements, emotional disturbances and mental deterioration.
Patients often die within 10 to 15 years after the onset of the disease despite receiving treatment.
