Botulism
is a kind of foodpoisoning. It gets its name from Latin word botulus which
means sausage. In the past, many people got the illness from eating sausages which
were not properly cooked. Much of our food is cannedor preserved. If air remains in the
can, the food will get spoilt because of the bacteria in the air. So when canning is
complete, all the air must be removed before the can is sealed. But some bacteria called
clostridium botulinum can thrive even without air so if the canned food has not been
properly cooked,the bacteria multiply in the sealed can and poison the food. If this food
is eaten, the victim becomes affected y nausea, vomiting and paralysis of the
muscles.
It may become difficult to see,speak or swallow. In severe cases, the person may die.
If your family preserves food at home, make sure that the food is pressure-cooked before
it is bottled.
Also, buy canned food only from a reputablemanufacturer.
