Deathly Hallows
There were once three brothers, who were traveling along a lonely winding road at twilight. In time, the brothers reached a river too treacherous to pass. But being learned in the magical arts, the three brothers simply waved their wands and made a bridge. Before they could cross, however, they found their path blocked by a hooded figure. It was Death, and he felt cheated. Cheated because travelers would normally drown in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to congratulate the tree brothers on their magic and said that each had earned a prize for having been clever enough to evade him. The oldest asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. So Death fashioned him one from an elder tree that stood nearby. The second brother decided he wanted to humiliate Death even further and asked for the power to recall loved ones from the grave. So Death plucked a stone from the river and offered it to him. Finally, Death turned to the third brother. A humble man, he asked for something that would allow him to go forth from that place without bring followed by Death. And so it was that Death reluctantly handed over his own cloak of invisibility.
The first brother traveled to a distant village, where with elder wand in hand, he killed a wizard with whom he had once quarreled. Drunk with the power that the elder wand had given him, he bragged of his invincibility. But that night another wizard stole the wand and slit the brother’s throat for good measure. And so Death took the first brother for his own.
The second brother journeyed to his home, where he took the stone and turned it thrice in hand. To his delight, the girl he’d once hopped to marry before her untimely death appeared before him. Yet, soon she turned sad and cold for she did not belong in the mortal world. Driven mad with hopeless longing, the second brother killed himself so as to join her. And so Death took the second brother.
As for the third brother, Death searched for many years but was never able to find him. Only when he attained a great age did the youngest brother, shed the cloak of invisibility and given it to his son. He then greeted Death as an old friend and went with him gladly, departing this life as equals
یادگارهای مرگ
روزی روزگاری سه برادر بودند که در هوای گرگ و میش سحر در جاده دورافتاده بادگیری سفر می کردند. سرانجام سه برادر به رودخانه ای رسیدند که از بس متلاطم بود نمی توانستند از آن بگذرند. سه برادر که در جادوگری استاد بودند با حرکت ساده چوبدستیشان پلی پدید آوردند. اما پیش از آن که از آن عبور کنند پیکره پوشیده ای راهشان را سد کرد. او مرگ بود که فکر می کرد فریب خورده، زیرا به طور معمول، مسافران در رودخانه غرق می شدند. اما مرگ حیله گر و مکار بود. او در ظاهر برای جادوی سه برادر به آن ها تبریک گفته و به آن ها گفت برای فراست در گریز از مرگ هر سه برادر سزاوار پاداش هستند. برادر بزرگتر خواستار یک چوبدستی شد که قدرتمندتر از آن در جهان وجود نداشته باشد. بنابراین مرگ از درخت یاس کبودی که در نزدیکی بود یک چوبدستی برای او ساخت. برادر دوم تصمیم گرفت مرگ را بیشتر از آن تحقیر کند و از او چیزی خواست که با آن بتواند عزیزانش را از قبر فراخواند. بنابراین مرگ سنگی را از رودخانه برداشت و به دست او داد. سرانجام، مرگ رو به برادر سوم کرد. او که مردی متواضع بود چیزی خواست که با آن بتواند از آن مکان برود، بی آنکه مرگ در تعقیبش باشد. و این گونه بود که مرگ در کمال بی میلی شنل نامرئی خودش را به او داد.
برادر اول به دهکده دوری سفر کرد و با ابرچوبدستی در دستش، جادوگری را که روزی با او دعوا کرده بود، کشت. او که تحت تاثیر قدرت ابرچوبدستی قرار گرفته بود، شکست ناپذیری خود را به رخ کشید. اما آن شب، جادوگر دیگری چوبدستی را دزدید و سر برادر را نیز گوش تا گوش برید. و به این ترتیب مرگ، اولین برادر را از آن خود کرد.
دومین برادر به خانه اش رفت و در آنجا سنگ را درآورد و آن را سه بار در دستش چرخاند. در کمال سرور، دختری که پیش از مرگ نابهنگامش آرزوی ازدواج با او را داشت در برابرش ظاهر شد. با این حال، دختر غمگین و سرد شد، چون به دنیای فانی تعلق نداشت. دومین برادر، ناامید از برآورده شدن آرزویش از شدت خشم خود را کشت تا به دختر بپیوندد. و بدین ترتیب، مرگ دومین برادر را نیز گرفت.
اما با این که مرگ سال ها به دنبال سومین برادر گشت هرگز قادر به یافتنش نشد. برادر
کوچکتر تنها زمانی شنل نامرئی را از تنش درآورد و به پسرش داد که بسیار پیر شده بود. آنگاه همچون دوستی قدیمی به استقبال مرگ رفت و هم تراز با او، زندگی را بدرود گفت.
