Mr White has a small shop in the middle of town, and he sells pictures in it. They are not expensive ones, but some of them are quite pretty. Last Saturday a woman came into the shop and looked at a lot of pictures. Then she took Mr White to one of them and said, 'How much do you want for this one?' It was a picture of horses in a field.

Mr White looked at it for a few seconds and then went and brought his book. He opened it, looked at the first page and then said, 'I want twenty pounds for that one.'

The woman shut her eyes for a few seconds and then said, 'I can give you two pounds for it.'

Two pounds?' Mr White said angrily. 'Two pounds? But the canvas cost more than two pounds.'

'Oh, but it was clean then,' the woman said.
 

آقاي وايت يك مغازه‌ي كوچك در وسط شهر داشت، و در آن تابلو مي‌فروخت. آن‌ها (تابلو‌ها) گران نبودند، ولي بعضي از آن‌ها واقعا زيبا بودند. شنبه‌ي گذشته خانمي به فروشگاه آمد و به تعداد زيادي از عكس ها نگريست. بعد يكي از آن ها را به آقاي وايت نشان داد و گفت: بابت اين يكي بايد چه قدر بپردازم؟ اون نقاشي، عكسي از تعدادي اسب‌ در مزرعه بود.

آقاي وايت براي چند ثانيه به آن نگاه كرد و سپس رفت و كتاب خود را آورد. كتاب را باز كرد، و به اولين صفحه نگاه كرد و گفت: من براي آن از شما بيست پوند مي خواهم .

آن خانم براي چند ثانيه چشم هايش را بست و گفت: من مي توانم براي آن دو پوند بدهم.

آقاي وايت با عصبانيت گفت: دو پوند؟ دو پوند؟ فقط قيمت پارچه‌ي آن بيش از دو پوند است.

آن خانم گفت: بله، در صورتي كه تميز بود!
